Smart organisations invest in becoming colour blind friendly.

Business understands that marginal gains are often the difference between success and failure. It is these marginal gains which help businesses accelerate beyond their competition.

In business terms, colour blindness is an issue affecting

5% of your customers

&

potentially hundreds of your employees

Important: As red/green types of colour blindness are carried on the X chromosome, accessibility becomes especially important for businesses who tailor their products or services towards males. Learn more here.

Communication through colour.

In our increasingly digital world, colour has become a hugely powerful marketing tool, yet over the last few decades people with colour blindness have been left behind. The main selling place for your business - its website - won’t attract colour blind customers if you don’t serve their needs, instead you’ll turn them away.

Whatever your business, whether it be retail, marketing, financial services, manufacturing or more, it needs to communicate with people effectively.

A colour wheel which illustrates how colour is increasingly used for marketing. We offer colour blindness advice and solutions for businesses.

Let’s work together.

Given the prominence of colour blindness across society we see unique opportunity for businesses not only to capitalise economically from colour blindness solutions (through investment to improve marginal gains), but also to contribute meaningfully towards lasting social sustainability change.

Successful businesses make the most of opportunities when they realise they may have been missing a trick.

What to consider?

  • Many colour blind people admit to often being unsure of information presented with colour formatting, especially in presentations and internal reporting procedures.

Your colour blind employees, customers, investors and other stakeholders will face similar exclusion - which ultimately has a knock on effect on performance - if you don’t ensure information is created in an accessible way.

Sometimes such challenges can produce complex and expensive mistakes. Why not implement simple and inexpensive solutions?

  • Important features across your branding may be indistinguishable due to a lack of contrast in the way that your brand palette is applied.

Where your brand colours are used in a marketing context, e.g. kit sponsors, this may result in fans being unable to read your logo introducing obvious commercial implications.

Similarly, product packaging is often badly designed from a colour blindness perspective. Not only can this result in your product being overlooked in terms of sales, but it can have health implications, especially where nutritional information is concerned e.g. diabetics struggling to understand sugar content.

Did you know, colour vision loss is a well known side effect of diabetes?

  • Designers (and web designers in particular) are often not aware of how inaccessible certain colour combinations can be to people with colour blindness. Use of brand palette colours for navigation can be especially problematic for users if issues have not been addressed at the design stage.

Common problems include: navigating between menus, distinguishing hyperlinks, challenges when trying to buy tickets or merchandise (because information is given in colour only), illegible text, and lack of clear product colour labelling (e.g. garments) where this confusion often becomes the difference maker between converted site visits or not.

  • Does your business operate machinery and/or rely upon machinery and technology including safety control features?  Do you have control protocols in place to ensure colour blind staff can’t inadvertently make mistakes? Have you assessed your emergency equipment and procedures to check whether your premises are safe for colour blind staff and visitors?
